Driving Virginia’s Economy

Each fall the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) hosts public meetings around the state to provide an opportunity to share information with you and for you to share your comments on transportation investments that will guide funding decisions for critical needs in your region. These comments helped guide development of the Fiscal Year 2016 -2021 Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP). This year’s Fall Transportation Meetings kick-offed in Lynchburg on September 23, 2014. Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment, Virginia P3 office, along with your local MPO/PDC were onsite to take your questions and comments.

Additionally, the FY 2015-2020 Six-Year Improvement Program (FY15-20 SYIP) adopted in June 2014 by the CTB is being adjusted to transition to the new prioritization process, referred to as House Bill 2, which was signed into law by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Prioritization is a significant development in transportation because – for the first time – law requires projects to be scored based on an objective and quantifiable analysis. This process will serve as a valuable tool for the CTB to select projects and be held accountable for their decisions. Prioritization will also make project selection more transparent because the process will be open to the public. You will know how the projects scored and the decisions behind the CTB’s project selection. The Revised FY15-20 SYIP was  presented to the CTB for adoption in November 2014. The CTB  provided information at the Fall Transportation Meetings to inform the public about the prioritization process and solicit input on transportation needs. Currently the prioritization process and how it will be administered is being developed. The CTB will use the process to select projects beginning July 2016.
