Chowdhury is AMS assistant director

Chowdhury
Tanveer Chowdhury, P.E., has been promoted to assistant director of systems management in the Asset Management Division. He had been serving as an acting assistant director for the past seven months.
Chowdhury joined the division, then called the Maintenance Division, in 2001, as a senior pavement management engineer and program manager. In recent years he has been VDOT’s lead pavement management engineer as well as program manager of infrastructure systems information. Under his direction, the division has made important changes in the collection of pavement condition data and analysis and reporting of infrastructure conditions. He will continue to lead in these areas while implementing the Asset Management System statewide.
He has two degrees in civil engineering, a bachelor’s degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a master’s degree from Kansas State University.
Collins takes Salem RA post

Collins
Robert "Dan" Collins, who recently held the job of Martinsville city manager, will become residency administrator for Salem Residency.
Collins brings experience from management positions in cities and counties in Virginia, Missouri, Tennessee and North Carolina. He assisted with a nationally recognized downtown redevelopment program in Tarboro, N.C., and he oversaw the James Olin Flood Protection Project, a $43.5 million flood levee project on the Maury River. Collins received the “Public Administrator of the Year Award” in 1993 from the American Society for Public Administration and the “Community Improvement Award” in 1995 from the Tennessee Municipal League.
Collins earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in organizational management from Tusculum College in Tennessee. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University teaching city management courses. He is a member of the Virginia Local Government Management Association Executive Board.
Handy is Rocky Mount leader

Handy
Tony Handy, P. E., has been selected as Rocky Mount Residency’s new residency administrator. He moves up from residency staff engineer at the residency. He has been acting residency administrator for the past three months.
Handy, who is a licensed surveyor, began his career as a survey party chief with Anderson and Associates in Blacksburg. Eight years ago he joined VDOT as an engineering technician in the Salem District Survey Section. Later he moved to the district’s Drainage Section, where he advanced from technician to associate engineer for location and design. His next post was at Williamsburg Residency where he was assistant resident engineer for construction and land development.
He has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in engineering management from Old Dominion University.

- Tim Knoebel and Jason Krempl, Richmond District Bridge Section, have successfully completed the Professional Engineer’s exam and received their Professional Engineer’s license.
- Bruce Nelson, equipment repair technician senior, Saluda Residency Shop, has been named 2007 Public Fleet Technician of the Year by the Association of Equipment Management Professionals.
- Joan Spangler, human resource analyst I, Fredericksburg District, has earned the Professional in Human Resources accreditation.
