Hull Retires After 51+Years of Service

Hull
Gene Hull’s absence is already felt around the Northern Virginia District where he served as deputy district administrator. After serving more than 51 years, Hull retired from VDOT in November.
Hull started his career in 1956 as a maintenance worker in the Staunton District.
Hull was “temporarily” reassigned to work as a construction inspector on the original Springfield Interchange project in Fairfax County, then a part of the Culpeper District. He never left.
“Gene is a true leader and highly respected by his VDOT family, elected officials and the road-building industry for his professionalism and his vast knowledge of construction, ” said Shelby Newell, Hull’s executive secretary senior for 12 years.
During his tenure, Hull was part of some major construction in Northern Virginia. Here are just a few:
- Interstate 95/395/495 interchange
- Interstate 66 between I-495 and Washington, D.C.
- Capital Beltway
- Dulles Toll Road
