Richard L. Walton has been VDOT’s Chief of Policy and the Environment since December 2005. He is responsible for managing the agency’s environmental program, long-range transportation planning and legislative and regulatory affairs.

Earlier, he was a senior assistant attorney general in Virginia’s Office of the Attorney General, where he had led the transportation team for nearly 20 years. Before that he worked as an assistant attorney general representing VDOT and as a special assistant attorney general assigned to VDOT’s Fredericksburg District. He received the distinguished Service Award and the Meritorious Service Award for his work in the Attorney General’s Office.

Bachelor’s degree in government and foreign affairs, Hampden-Sydney College; law degree, Vermont Law School

Married to Brenda Edwards Walton. Three children: Courtney, Lindsay and Richard
