The Highway Safety Challenge was created by the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to combat the increasing number of highway crashes and fatalities on the roads of the commonwealth.

These are the facts:

  • Not using seatbelts leads to more traffic fatalities than any other single driving behavior.

  • Crashes are the leading cause of death for Virginians under 30.

  • Cars, trucks, pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles must safely coexist on the roadways. Highway motorcyclist deaths are up 61 percent from last year, and large truck-involved crashes accounted for 118 fatalities in 2006.

Since the original partners launched this program in October 2007, additional partners have joined the effort. We encourage others to come together with us.
