IMPORTANT NOTICE

Today, a Virginia construction firm sent me a copy of a letter on US Department of Transportation letterhead signed by a George Mason, listed as a Senior Procurement Officer. The letter states that the USDOT is registering prospective contractors. It goes on to ask that certain financial information be faxed to the number given.

VDOT telephoned the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General Hotline at 1-800-424-9071 regarding the U.S. D.O.T. letter. The U.S.O.I.G hotline operator stated that they have received more than 600 phone calls regarding this letter and that the letter is fraudulent. The hotline operator further stated that our contractors should discard the letter and that the U.S.D.O.T. would never request such information especially by fax.
