Preparing for a Hurricane
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November. During that period, eastern Virginia is especially at risk for a major storm.The best defense against the danger and destruction caused by hurricanes is to be prepared and stay informed. For more information about how to prepare for hurricanes or other threats, visit ReadyVirginia.gov, your comprehensive resource for emergency preparedness in Virginia.
Residents should:
- Get a kit for your family to use in case of an emergency
- Make a plan so you know what to do in the event of a storm
- Stay informed to know what threats you face
Evacuations can be ordered by local officials if they believe an approaching storm will be a safety hazard or cause serious damage.
