“I recommend involvement in the trainee or core development program as a start so they could gain insight at every level within the residency as a firm foundation. Then, move up through the ranks of VDOT to further their knowledge base.”
When asked what one should do to be successful at VDOT as a new hire:
"Ask lots of questions! Take the time to introduce yourself to people to learn what they do and how they fit within the organization. One thing that I have learned since being hired is how complex the organization is. Before my employment, when I thought of VDOT, I just thought of the roads. I didn’t consider all the other components of transportation (i.e. tunnels, bridges, boats, etc.)"
Advice that you would give to a new hire that wants to follow in your steps for your particular position?
“Focus on learning, building and maintaining relationships with people within all different parts of the VDOT organization. Operations touches so many facets of VDOT, so not only knowing the agency organizational structure and business processes, but also making personal connections with people that work in those other areas is critical to being able to make things happen.”
