Benefits

Working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has many advantages. An average new employee electing family health care coverage has a benefits package currently valued at 58 percent of their annual salary.

That average employee, earning $40,000 per year, actually receives $63,200 in total compensation.

Here are just a few of the tangible benefits that come with a VDOT career.

Paid time off

Twelve paid holidays each year and a minimum of 12 days of annual leave (vacation), as well as two days of volunteer service/school assistance leave. New employees have eight days of sick leave and four days of family and personal leave available to them each year.

Health care

The program includes medical, dental, prescription drug and mental health coverage and a flexible benefit program.

Disability coverage

VDOT provides short and long-term disability benefits to employees at no cost. Disability coverage and workers’ compensation are not included in the 58 percent figure quoted above.

Retirement

Retirement benefits are automatic and paid by the state. Employees with five or more years of service have the option of electing a monthly benefit at retirement or taking a lump sum. Early retirement is available starting at age 50, depending on years of service. In addition, a deferred compensation plan with a VDOT cash match is available.

Work/life

Telecommuting and flexible work schedules are valued. The cost of commuting by carpool, vanpool or mass transit may be subsidized.
