TRANSPORTATION BOARD AWARDS $41 MILLION IN PROJECT CONTRACTS DURING ITS SEPTEMBER MEETING
RICHMOND – The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded this month $41 million in construction contracts to improve roads and bridges in various regions of Virginia.
The contract awards follow:
Winchester Road bridge replacement, Warren County
The CTB awarded $19.2 million to Flippo Construction Co. Inc. of Forrestville, Maryland to replace an existing three lane bridge on Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River with a new five lane structure that will include sidewalks. The affected bridge approaches will be rebuilt. Intersection and signal improvements will be included in the work as well. Traffic will be maintained at all times throughout the project. Motorists should prepare for minor delays. The project’s scheduled completion date is September 2009.
Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel repairs, Hampton
Lanford Brothers Company Inc. of Roanoke, Virginia received a $3.6 million award to repair the walkways and replace the handrail system with a new one in both the eastbound and westbound tunnels of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The work includes building a corrosion protection system in the eastbound tunnel. Construction will take place at night, with lane closures on the outside lanes of both tunnels. The project’s scheduled completion date is June 2006.
Route 100 bridge replacement, Wythe County
A $7.3 million award went to DLB Inc. of Hillsville, Virginia to replace a deficient bridge over the New River with a new structure. Traffic will be maintained throughout construction and work will be coordinated with the Department of Conservation and Recreation for impact on the New River Trail. Route 100 is a two-lane highway that travels through a rural, mountainous section in the county. The project’s scheduled completion date is May 2008.
Route 50 bridge replacement, Arlington County
The CTB awarded a $6.5 million contract to Flippo Construction to replace the Route 50 bridge that travels over Route 27. Construction will be limited to non-rush hour periods daily. The project’s scheduled completion date is May 2007.
Foursquare Road improvements, Isle of Wight County
R.J. Smith Construction Inc. of Midlothian, Virginia received a $2.2 million award to rebuild a section of Foursquare Road. The project’s scheduled completion date is November 2006.
Route 206 bridge replacement, King George County
Bryant Contracting, Inc. of Toano, Virginia received a $2.1 million award to replace the Route 206 bridge over Peppermill Creek. The existing bridge was built in 1932. The project’s scheduled completion date is August 2006.
