VDOT awards over $200,000 in rural transportation grants
Eight local planning commission studies funded for Fiscal Year 2006

RICHMOND - Several communities and districts across the state will receive funds for planning to improve their transportation mobility, vitality and safety through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Rural Transportation Planning Grant program. Eight grant applications have been selected for fiscal year 2006 funding. The proposed transportation planning projects include highway corridor studies, a highway access management study, a town traffic flow study, and planning for a town that will contribute to the transportation element of its comprehensive plan.

The Rural Transportation Planning Grant program annually reserves a minimum of $200,000 in federal funds to assist in financing the transportation planning proposals for non-metropolitan areas of Virginia. VDOT's Transportation Planning and Mobility Division administers this competitive annual grant-application program. The program has helped accomplish many planning actions since it began in 1997. Projects have included plans and studies for a variety of transportation system improvements including park and ride lots, heritage bike trails, and public transportation needs-assessments in Virginia's rural areas.

For fiscal year 2006 (beginning July 1, 2006), $204,340 in funding assistance is being awarded. Local planning districts and regional commissions are providing $68,760 in local funds to match their 2006 proposals. The Rural Transportation Planning Grant program funding total for FY06 is $273,100.

A list of the successful transportation planning proposals follows.
