COMMONWEALTH TRANSPORTATION BOARD AWARDS NEW SAFETY REST AREA CONTRACTS
NORFOLK — The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded $10 million in contracts today to reconstruct two Virginia interstate safety rest areas. John L. Mattingly Construction Co., Inc. of White Plains, Md. received a $5.75 million contract to build a new welcome center on Interstate 95 south near Fredericksburg. The CTB awarded a $4.39 million contract to David A. Nice Builders of Williamsburg, Va. to build a new safety rest area on Interstate 64 west in New Kent County.
The new I-95 South Fredericksburg Welcome Center will have approximately 14,500 square feet, additional restrooms, and ground and parking improvements that will better serve travelers. The existing site will be closed starting Sept. 29 for the reconstruction. Work to replace the original rest area is slated for completion by July 9, 2007. The new I-64 West New Kent Safety Rest Area will have over 9,000 square feet, additional restroom facilities, new landscaping and parking improvements that will better serve travelers. The reconstruction project will begin Sept. 29 with the closing of the existing site and is slated for completion by June 9, 2007. To see a rendering of the new New Kent County facility, click here.
Both new facilities will also include innovative energy and water conservation systems that will reduce short- and long-term maintenance and utility costs.
The projects are part of a $20 million statewide improvement program to renovate 11 Virginia safety rest areas and to reconstruct three safety rest area and welcome center locations.
