ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY VOLUNTEERS HAVE QUEEN-SIZE CLEANING TO DO VDOT statewide spring pickup event set for April 14
VDOT statewide spring pickup event set for April 14
RICHMOND – Adopt-a-Highway volunteers have rallied to make the commonwealth more beautiful just in time for Historic Garden Week visitors each April since 1988.
But this year, there’s another reason to make our roadways sparkle: the queen is coming.
In commemoration of America’s 400th Anniversary, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is coming to Virginia May 3 and 4.
Volunteers will be out in force on April 14 to participate in Virginia’s statewide spring pickup. Motorists should be on the lookout for “Cleanup Crew Working” signs along with volunteers dressed in bright orange vests and armed with bright orange bags.
The Virginia Department of Transportation program includes thousands of volunteers who are encouraged to clean up their adopted stretch of road at least four times a year.
Most make a point to clean up for this annual statewide spring cleanup day.
Approximately one-quarter of Virginia’s 57,000-plus miles of state-maintained roads are adopted.
With 19 years of success, Adopt-a-Highway has helped generate related programs such as Adopt-a-Spot, Adopt-a-Street, Adopt-a-Stream and Assign-a-Highway to help keep Virginia beautiful.
Adopt-a-Highway volunteers alone provide the equivalent of $3 million in savings annually in litter control services.
For more information, go to the Adopt-a-Highway pages of VirginiaDOT.org or call 1-800-PRIDE-VA (1-800-774-3382).
