ROBERT H. CARY NAMED LYNCHBURG DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR
15-Year VDOT Veteran to Oversee Area That Includes Nine Counties, Two Cities

Rob CaryRICHMOND — Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David S. Ekern has named Robert H. Cary, a 15-year VDOT veteran, as the Lynchburg District administrator.

Cary currently serves as the assistant Salem District engineer for preliminary engineering. In his new role, Cary will oversee VDOT’s activities in a nine-county area that includes the cities of Danville and Lynchburg.

“Rob brings a strong combination of leadership experience, public- and private-sector knowledge, and an innovative spirit to our senior management team,” Ekern said. “We scoured the industry for a world-class transportation professional to fill this important leadership role. We are thrilled to have found someone within our ranks to oversee VDOT’s activities and serve our customers in the Lynchburg District.”

When he assumes his new responsibilities in early November, Cary will manage approximately 750 employees and will be responsible for approximately 15,000 miles of primary and secondary roads.

He succeeds Dale H. Grigg, who capped a 35-year VDOT career by serving as acting Lynchburg District administrator for the past year.

Cary began his career at VDOT in 1992 as a transportation engineer in the Staunton District. He later served as the Salem District location and design engineer.

Before coming to VDOT, Cary was a staff engineer and surveyor for William H. Gordon and Associates of Woodbridge.

He holds a bachelors of science degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech, where he is also working toward a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering. He is a graduate of VDOT’s Executive Leadership Program.

Cary is a licensed professional engineer for the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as a licensed land surveyor.

He is chairman of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) Technical Committee on Preconstruction Engineering and member of AASHTO’s subcommittee on design.
