Design public hearing scheduled for Business Route 23 bridge in Wise County
August 12 from 4 - 6 p.m. at J.I. Burton High School in Norton
BRISTOL - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing in August to show plans for the proposed removal of the Business Route 23 bridge over an abandoned Norfolk and Southern rail track in Wise County.
The public hearing will be held Thursday, August 12 between 4 p.m. and 6p.m. at J.I. Burton High School, 109 11th Street in Norton.
The purpose of the meeting is to give citizens an opportunity to review and discuss plans to replace the Business Route 23 bridge located just outside the Norton City Limits with fill material which will cost less than constructing a new bridge. This method will eliminate all future maintenance that would be required with a bridge. Drainage will be accommodated by installing a pipe through the fill material.
VDOT is proposing to close the Business Route 23 bridge during construction and detour vehicle traffic using 11th Street, Main Avenue and Route 621, and detour truck traffic using Route 23 between Norton and Big Stone Gap. Approval in the form of a resolution from the Wise County Board of Supervisors is required for the roadway closure.
VDOT encourages all interested citizens to attend the public hearing. To give citizens more flexibility in their participation, there will be no formal presentation. Instead, citizens will be able to review maps, drawings and other materials explaining the proposed project and discuss the plans with VDOT representatives at their convenience anytime between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Also, citizens will have an opportunity to record verbal comments for the official record anytime during the meeting. Written comments will be accepted during the meeting or may be submitted to VDOT within 10 days following the meeting (August 22).
Maps and other materials pertaining to the project are available for review at the VDOT Bristol District Office, 870 Bonham Road, Bristol, Virginia. For additional information, or if you require special assistance to participate in the meeting, please call the VDOT District Office at (276) 669-6151 or device for hearing impaired (TTY) at 711.
