Design public hearing scheduled for Interstate 81 Exit 7 interchange improvements in Bristol
August 14 from 4 - 6 p.m. at VDOT Bristol District Auditorium

BRISTOL - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a design public hearing Tuesday (August 14) to show plans for proposed improvements to the Interstate 81 Exit 7 interchange in the City of Bristol.  The proposed improvements begin just north of Stage Coach Road to Linden Drive.

The public hearing will be held Tuesday, August 14 from 4 – 6 p.m. at VDOT Bristol District Office Auditorium, 870 Bonham Road, Bristol, Virginia, 24201.

The purpose of the meeting is to give citizens an opportunity to review and discuss plans to improve traffic flow on Old Airport Road at the Interstate 81 Exit 7 interchange in Bristol.

The proposed interchange improvement project includes:

  • Right turn lanes on Old Airport Road for the northbound and southbound I-81 on-ramps
  • Widening Old Airport Road approximately twelve feet under the I-81 bridges, providing space for two lanes southbound and northbound and a left turn lane on Old Airport Road
  • Widening of the bridge over Beaver Creek to the west side creating better traffic flow from Linden Drive to the I-81 southbound on-ramp
  • Dual left turn lanes on the northbound I-81 off-ramp.

VDOT encourages all interested citizens to attend the public hearing. To give citizens more flexibility in their participation, there will be no formal presentation. Instead, citizens will be able to review maps, drawings and other materials explaining the proposed project and discuss the plans with VDOT representatives at their convenience anytime between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Also, citizens will have an opportunity to record verbal comments for the official record anytime during the meeting. Written comments will be accepted during the meeting or may be submitted to VDOT by August 24.

Maps and other materials pertaining to the project are available for review at the VDOT Bristol District Office, 870 Bonham Road, Bristol, Virginia.  For additional information, or if you require special assistance to participate in the meeting, please call the VDOT District Office at (276) 669-6151 or device for hearing impaired (TTY) at 711.
