Interstate 81 exit 14 reconstruction awarded, begins January 2016

BRISTOL— The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) recently awarded the contract to reconstruct the Interstate 81 exit 14 interchange in Abingdon and work is anticipated to begin in January 2016.

The $34 million contract was awarded to W-L Construction & Paving, Inc., Chilhowie, Va.  The project includes replacement of the two interstate bridges over Route 647 (Old Jonesboro Road); separation of the northbound exit and entrance ramps; widening of Old Jonesboro Road; and modification of Dennison Drive; and adding signals at the ramp intersections.

The new on/off ramps will improve safety for motorists by eliminating the existing cloverleaf loops that force northbound traffic exiting I-81 to weave among vehicles entering the interstate because they share the same short acceleration/deceleration lane.

The project is scheduled to being January 2016 and be complete fall 2018.

For a period of approximately two weeks during construction of the northbound I-81 off ramp, traffic will use exit 13 and Route 611 (Spring Branch Road) to access Route 647 (Old Jonesboro Road).  Vehicle traffic will use Route 611 (Spring Branch Road) to access the south end of Jonesboro Road and truck traffic will use Route 611 to access Route 11 and the north end of Jonesboro Road.
