10 a.m. Feb. 15 Travel Advisory: Freezing Rain, snow remain in area
Avoid unnecessary travel
BRISTOL – With a mixture of freezing rain and snow falling in areas of southwestern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) asks motorists to postpone unnecessary travel.
Following are roadway conditions as of 10 a.m.:
- Interstates 81 and 77 are snow-covereed and slick.
- The majority of routes in Buchanan, Tazewell, Washington, Wythe, Smyth, Grayson, Bland, Scott and Wise counties are snow-covered and slick.
- In Russell, Lee and Dickenson counties, the majority of main roads have scattered snow and ice patches. Secondary routes are snow-covered and slick.
If travel is unavoidable, know the conditions before you go. Visit 511virginia.org, download the free VDOT 511 mobile app or call 511 for the latest road and traffic conditions. When traveling on area roadways, slow down and watch for black ice, avoiding sudden starts and stops.
For safe driving tips and other snow-related information, visit VDOT’s website: http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp
Note: VDOT’s goal is to make all roads passable within 48 hours after a winter storm ends. Our snow-removal crews work around the clock until conditions are safe for travel.
Common sense dictates that roads carrying the most traffic get top priority. VDOT clears interstates and most primary roads first. It also plows major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities or those with high traffic volumes. Other secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated if multiday storms hit Virginia, but crews will focus their efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.
Primary roads are numbered 1 through 599. Secondary roads are numbered 600 and up.
