Traffic control changes coming to Interstate 81 Exit 19 and Lee Highway in Abingdon
BRISTOL— Changes to how traffic moves on Route 11 (Lee Highway) near the Interstate 81 exit 19 northbound ramps will impact motorists in the coming days.
Temporary traffic signals are being added to Route 11 (Lee Highway) near the bottom of the northbound off ramp at exit 19. The signals will more efficiently move traffic to and from retail developments off the exit.
Poles for the traffic signals have been added to the intersection of Route 11 (Lee Highway) and the northbound off ramp. In the coming days, motorists can anticipate the traffic signals to be installed and be placed on flash so motorists can become familiar with the traffic control changes.
Additionally, there will be a lane closure of the exit 19 northbound off ramp during the early morning hours Wednesday, November 2 (midnight to 4 a.m.) to install an in-pavement traffic detection device that will alert the signals should waiting traffic back up to the interstate.
The signals near the exit 19 off ramp will begin controlling traffic the week of November 7.
Work continues on Route 11 (Lee Highway) to install the islands and turn lanes for the new Wal-mart entrance. The construction and paving work in the roadway will be completed at night, with work on the entrance wrapping up in two weeks.
Motorists should be alert to milled pavement and temporary pavement markings on Route 11 until paving occurs in the coming days.
In 2021, a project to make safety and traffic flow improvements at exit 19 will begin construction and will include permanent traffic signals at the exit 19 on and of ramp. The project also includes adding turn lanes at the northbound off ramp; adding traffic signals at the southbound on and off ramps; and changing the southbound off-ramp. (END)
