August 6-12: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert

BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.

To help motorists take the guesswork out of travel plans, call VDOT’s 511 or visit http://www.511virginia.org for real-time traffic information.

Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.

INTERSTATE PROJECTS

***Interstate 81 – Exit 14:  In an effort to expedite work along the I-81 Exit 14 southbound off ramp, the southbound off ramp will be closed August 5 – 15. Motorists should use I-81 Exits 17 and 13 while the southbound Exit 14 off ramp is closed. Work is underway to reconstruct Interstate 81 exit 14 to better accommodate traffic volumes and to replace the north and southbound interstate 81 bridges at exit 14. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of day/night lane closures on Old Jonesboro Road, as well as the possibility of nighttime lane closures on Interstate 81 north and south. (Completion: fall 2018)

***F310 bridge rehabilitation over I-81 at Exit 10:
The Route F310 bridge over Interstate 81 at exit 10 has reopened to two-way traffic following a bridge improvement project. Work continues beneath the bridge. Be alert to workers and pay close attention to signs and message boards. (Completion: fall 2018) Interstate 77 Exit 32: The right shoulder of the I-77 northbound exit 32 ramp is closed for shoulder widening operations. This work is part of a project to add a merge lane on I-77 northbound, beginning at Interstate 77 exit 32 and extending to the I-77/I-81 overlap at Interstate 81 exit 80. Use caution in this area. (Completion: September 2018)

Interstate 77 northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel:
Until November, WVDOT will be performing an extensive paving project between WV Exits 1 and 9, creating the need for one-lane traffic northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel.

West Virginia is taking truck traffic off of Interstate 77 before the work zone and detouring them onto Route 460 between Bluefield and Princeton. Interstate 77 north and Interstate 81 south truck traffic should consider taking Interstate 81 to Route 460 at Christiansburg to avoid delays. Interstate 81 north traffic coming from Tennessee should consider detouring at Abingdon exit 13 onto Route 11 north to Route 19, then onto Route 19/460 at Claypool Hill to avoid delays.

Use caution in this area and plan for significant delays, especially on weekends. For information regarding WVDOT’s paving project, visit www.wv511.org or download the WV511 Drive Safe app.

I-81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road: Due to a bridge replacement project on Interstate 81 at the bridges over Halls Bottom Road, motorists should be alert to an altered traffic pattern.

Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) is closed underneath the interstate bridges. Only emergency-response vehicles will have access; all other vehicle traffic will be required to detour. (Completion: Fall 2018)
