July 16-22: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert
BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.
To help motorists take the guesswork out of travel plans, call VDOT’s 511 or visit http://www.511virginia.org for real-time traffic information.
Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.
***Interstate 77 at mile marker 50 – AEP Project: Due to the installation of a new overhead transmission crossing by Appalachian Power Company (AEP) on I-77 at mile marker 50 in Bland County, motorists will encounter delays July 16 – 20 from 6 a.m. until noon. Installation will require multiple rolling road blocks by Virginia State Police during these hours. Motorists should use caution in this area and slow down for police and contractor vehicles assisting with the rolling road blocks. (Completion: July 20)
***Interstate 77 northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel: Until November 1, WVDOT will be performing an extensive paving project between WV Exits 1 and 9, creating the need for one-lane traffic northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel.
West Virginia is taking truck traffic off of Interstate 77 before the work zone and detouring them onto Route 460 between Bluefield and Princeton. Interstate 77 north and Interstate 81 south truck traffic should consider taking Interstate 81 to Route 460 at Christiansburg to avoid delays. Interstate 81 north traffic coming from Tennessee should consider detouring at Abingdon exit 13 onto Route 11 north to Route 19, then onto Route 19/460 at Claypool Hill to avoid delays.
Use caution in this area and plan for significant delays, especially on weekends. For information regarding WVDOT’s paving project, visit www.wv511.org or download the WV511 Drive Safe app.

(Completion: fall 2018) Interstate 77 Exit 32: The right shoulder of the I-77 northbound exit 32 ramp is closed for shoulder widening operations.
