Additional Safety Service Patrols Added on I-64 and Route 29
CULPEPER – The Safety Service Patrols that have assisted motorists along Interstate 64 in Albemarle County since August 2006 are extending patrol hours to provide additional service. The Safety Service Patrol vehicles will monitor Interstate 64 from Crozet (Exit 107) to Milepost 127 between Shadwell and Keswick, from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. seven days a week. Patrols will also monitor Route 29 from I-64 to the Barracks Road exit.
The additional service more than doubles the time that Safety Service Patrols will be available to assist motorists who experience problems. Patrol duties will include roadside assistance for motorists who are stopped along the shoulder or who call the Virginia Department of Transportation for assistance. Aid includes calling a tow truck, providing fuel or directions, phoning for other help, simple repairs like changing a flat tire, and traffic management at crash scenes. VDOT’s Northwest Regional Operations Center located at the Staunton District complex will oversee the Safety Service Patrol operations in Albemarle County.
The Safety Service Patrol also works closely with the Virginia State Police and other emergency agencies on incident response and traffic monitoring. A recent study by the Virginia Transportation Research Council at the University of Virginia found that Safety Service Patrol responses reduced the time to clear an incident by an average of 17 percent.
The patrol will be available to provide coverage during University of Virginia sports events, concerts and other high-traffic occasions, and can also be deployed to other areas within the region to cover emergencies. URS Corp. of Salem, Va. is providing the service under a three-year contract in Albemarle County.
