Overnight Closures Planned on Route 29 in Albemarle County
CULPEPER – Route 29 will be closed overnight between Airport Road and Timberwood Boulevard in Albemarle County during geophysical testing next week to ensure there are no subsurface voids in the area where a drainpipe failed and caused holes to open in the road surface.
The northbound lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Wednesday, Sept. 5; the southbound lanes will be closed during the same hours on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Friday, Sept. 7. During the closures traffic will be detoured around the project via Proffit Road, Worth Crossing and Timberwood Boulevard.
Message boards have been placed on Route 29 north and south of the project area to alert motorists to the closures; personnel from the Virginia Department of Transportation will set up the detours each night and provide assistance to motorists if needed. The dates and exact times of the lane closures are tentative and may change based on weather or traffic conditions.
Schnabel Engineering South, under a contract with VDOT, will do the geophysical work. Schnabel will perform tests using sound waves and electrical currents to identify any subsurface cavities or void spaces that may have been caused by the failure of the drainpipe that carried storm water under Route 29. If any voids are identified additional testing will be done to determine their size and how best to fill them to prevent additional settling.
The replacement of the drainpipe has been completed, with only final grading and reseeding of the road shoulders remaining. This subsurface evaluation is the final stage of the pipe replacement project.
