Route 29 Pipe Replacement Will Begin Monday
CULPEPER – DLB Inc. of Hillsville, Va. was awarded an emergency contract to replace a failing drainpipe that carries storm water under Route 29 at Hollymead. The company will begin mobilizing equipment to the work site on Monday, July 9.
DLB will use a boring machine to drill a horizontal shaft beneath the pavement; sections of steel pipe will be pushed into the shaft to serve as the new drainpipe. Once the boring is complete the new pipe will be connected to the drainage inlets on both ends of the pipe and the old pipe will be sealed and abandoned in place.
The contract was awarded under an emergency bidding procedure that expedited the time necessary to begin the work. The estimated cost of the project is $160,000 although the contract was awarded on a time and materials basis, meaning that unforeseen problems could increase the cost.
Motorists should be aware of the work zone on Route 29 just south of Airport Road beginning Monday, July 9. Traffic patterns will change during the project as the equipment is moved and boring continues under different sections of the road. Motorists should be alert for signs and message boards that will direct them; they should also remain alert and be aware that men and equipment may be working near the travel lanes.
The pipe replacement project is estimated to be completed in five to six weeks.
