Walkers, Bicyclists Take Center Stage at May 2 Meeting

CULPEPER – Bicyclists and walkers will have an opportunity to hear about the Virginia Department of Transportation’s bicycle and pedestrian program during a meeting on Wednesday, May 2 in Culpeper.

VDOT’s program was conceived to ensure that bicycling, walking and other forms of non-motorized transportation receive the same consideration as motorized transportation in the planning, design, construction and operation of Virginia’s transportation network. The program also stresses the criticality of ensuring that the disabled community has access to the facilities, that the bicycle and pedestrian facilities provide connectivity with other modes of transportation and allow independent mobility regardless of age, physical constraints or income.

The meeting in Culpeper is being organized in cooperation with the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission. It will be held at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of VDOT’s Culpeper District Headquarters, 1601 Orange Road in Culpeper.

It is planned to reach local officials and staff, the advisory committees that participate in transportation planning in the area served by the planning district, bicycle and pedestrian advocates and interested members of the public. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission serves Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties and the towns of Culpeper, Gordonsville, Madison, Orange, Remington, and Warrenton.

Officials from VDOT’s planning and land development staff will talk about the agency’s program. Following those presentations there will be ample opportunity for questions and informal discussion of the program and how it can be integrated into local and regional transportation planning.

For more information about the meetings contact John Giometti, Culpeper District Planning Manager, (540) 829-7546; or e-mail Culpeperinfo@VDOT.Virginia.gov. For directions to the meeting site call (540) 829-7500.
