Construction will begin on May 4, completion scheduled for late fall

– Construction on the Advance Mills bridge is expected to begin on May 4 following award of the $1.93-million contract to Fielder’s Choice Enterprises Inc. of Charlottesville.

The bridge is expected to be completed and open to traffic in the late fall.

The contract was executed April 11 by Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner David S. Ekern.

Fielder’s Choice Enterprises’ bid of $1,934,457.50 was the low bid on the project.

Eight companies submitted bids on the contract that ranged from $1.93 million to $2.42 million.

The project will build a new two-lane, steel truss bridge to span the North Fork Rivanna River on Route 743 at Advance Mills in northern Albemarle County.

The bridge will include a wide shoulder to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Improvements will be made to the roadway approaches on both sides of the bridge, including modifications to the intersection just east of the bridge to improve sight distances and safety for motorists.

The roadway approaches will also be widened to match the increased width of the two-lane bridge.

The new truss bridge will replace the current one-lane steel truss, timber deck structure that was closed in the spring of 2007 due to severe deterioration of the structural members that support the bridge.

That bridge will be demolished and the new bridge will be built in the same location.
