SPEED LIMITS REDUCED ON ROUTES 29, 33 IN GREENE COUNTY
45-mile-per hour zone extended in Ruckersville; 25-mph zone also extended in Stanardsville

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will reduce the speed limit on sections of Route 29 and Route 33 business in Greene County later this week.

On Route 29 in Ruckersville, the 45 mile-per-hour speed limit north of the Route 33 intersection will be extended approximately three-quarters of a mile north from its current location. The new limit of the 45 mile-per-hour zone will be just north of the entrance to the Luck Stone quarry.

On Route 33 business the speed limit will be reduced from its intersection with the Route 33 bypass just west of Stanardsville. From that intersection to a point approximately one-quarter mile east the current 55 mile-per-hour speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph. From that point east the current 35 mile-per-hour zone will be reduced to 25 mph extending to the current 25 mph zone through the town of Stanardsville.

These speed limit changes are being made after VDOT’s traffic engineers conducted a speed study in response to requests from county residents. The study determined that, on Route 29, the extension of the 45 mile-per-hour zone is appropriate due to an increase in vehicles turning into and out of several new businesses as well as significant speed differentials between through traffic on Route 29 and slower vehicles entering and exiting the road. On Route 33 business the study determined that the reduction is appropriate given the volume of traffic using the road as well as the presence of pedestrians, school buses and other traffic near the school complex.

The new speed limits will be posted and become effective on Route 29 on Thursday, Sept. 3 and on Route 33 business on Friday, Sept. 4.
