CTB AWARDS OPAL INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Construction will begin in late summer to improve intersection of Routes 15/29 and 17
CULPEPER — The Commonwealth Transportation Board has awarded construction of the Opal Interchange project in Fauquier County to Shirley Contracting Co., LLC, of Lorton.
Shirley’s $12,645,120 bid was the lowest of the three bidders on the project. This project was re-advertised for construction bids because the previous award was challenged by an unsuccessful bidder.
The Opal Interchange project eliminates a safety hazard at the existing intersection of Route 15/29 and Route 17 by relocating the turning movement from Route 15/29 south onto Route 17 southbound to a point further south and providing a loop ramp, a 256-foot-long bridge and the connecting roadway. This will eliminate a crossing movement on Route 29 at the existing signal-controlled intersection. One left-turn lane will remain for local traffic bound for the businesses on Route 17. The project’s design also allows the construction of additional ramps and loops in the future to complete a full interchange.
Construction on the Opal Interchange project, which has a total estimated cost of $44.6 million, including engineering, right-of-way acquisition and construction, is scheduled to begin in late summer.
