PUBLIC HEARING MAY 24 ON RT. 6 BRIDGE OVER HARDWARE RIVER
Project will replace existing structure with wider bridge
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a design public hearing May 24 on replacement of the bridge that carries Route 6 (West River Road) over the Hardware River in Fluvanna County. The hearing will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cunningham Elementary School, 479 Cunningham Road, Palmyra, VA 22963.
The current Hardware River bridge is a 24-foot-wide metal truss structure built in 1935. Located approximately eight miles east of Scottsville, it carries 2,673 vehicles per day, according to a 2009 count. The bridge is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, with a sufficiency rating of 32.3 out of 100.
VDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge with a concrete structure and new approaches on both ends. At 44 feet wide, the bridge will have significantly wider shoulders, be raised nearly 30 feet, and be located approximately 100 feet south of the alignment of the current road. The current bridge will remain open throughout construction, maintaining traffic flow. Toward the end of the construction period, however, periodic lane closures will occur as the new segment of roadway is tied in to the existing Route 6 roadway on each end.
Estimated cost of the bridge replacement is $6 million and is subject to change as the project’s design is developed.
The project schedule calls for right of way acquisition to begin in September 2012, with advertisement for construction in November 2013, followed by construction of the new bridge in 2014.
Project plans and environmental documents concerning the project, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500; or at VDOT’s Charlottesville Residency Office located at 701 VDOT Way, Charlottesville, VA 22911, 434-293-0011. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.
VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the project and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by June 3, 2011, to Mr. James S. Utterback, PMP, Culpeper District Administrator, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
