Superstructure replacement will require one-week closure followed by lane closures

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the bridge over Town Run on Route 639 (Cromwell Road) in Fauquier County on Monday, Oct. 17. The bridge will be closed so the superstructure can be replaced.

The bridge, which is located about one mile southeast of Route 616 (Bristersburg Road), will be closed for seven days while the steel beam, timber deck superstructure is replaced with a new pre-stressed concrete slab deck. Once the bridge reopens, one lane will remain closed so additional work can be completed. The project is scheduled for completion by late November.

During the one-week closure, motorists should follow the posted detour route: Route 616 to Route 610 (Aquia Road) to Route 612 (Brent Town Road). Once the bridge reopens, motorists should be alert for flaggers controlling traffic through the work zone, and for workers and equipment moving in the work area.

The current bridge, which was built in 1935, is posted for a maximum weight of 15 tons due to the structure’s condition.
