CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON RT. 53 ROUNDABOUT IN FLUVANNA
Intersection realignment will improve safety, efficiency of traffic flow at Route 600
CULPEPER — Construction will begin next week on a roundabout at the intersection of Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) and Route 600 (South Boston Road) in Fluvanna County.
The project contractor, J.L. Kent & Sons Inc., of Spotsylvania, plans to begin construction activity as soon as Monday, July 23. During the first several weeks of construction motorists may encounter intermittent lane closures and flagging operations as heavy equipment is moved into the construction site. The first activities will include clearing and grading of the area south of Route 53.
Traffic will be maintained on Route 53 and Route 600 throughout construction. The work will be done in phases and traffic will be shifted several times as construction progresses. Motorists should be alert for notice of upcoming traffic shifts and follow signs and other traffic controls.
The roundabout will replace the current “T” intersection, which is controlled by a stop sign on Route 600. The project will also shift Route 53 to the south and realign both its approaches to eliminate sharp curves and improve sight distance. The roundabout and new alignment of Route 53 will improve safety for motorists and allow traffic to move more efficiently through the intersection.
The project schedule calls for construction to be finished on or before April 26, 2013. J.L. Kent & Sons was awarded the $1,023,951.68 construction contract. The total cost of the project, including design, right of way, utility relocation and construction, is approximately $2 million.
