PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT ON BLACK CAT RD. PROJECT
VDOT will hold design public hearing on July 25

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites the public to a design public hearing on the proposed replacement of the Route 616 (Black Cat Road) bridge over the Buckingham Branch Railroad tracks in Albemarle County. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, July 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at VDOT’s Charlottesville Residency, 701 VDOT Way, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

The project will replace the current timber-deck bridge, built in 1947 by the railroad company, which is posted with a three-ton weight limit. The weight limit bars emergency vehicles and large trucks from using the bridge.

Due to the bridge’s substandard condition, VDOT proposes to accept the bridge into the state maintenance system and replace it with a wider bridge that will include two 11-foot travel lanes and five-foot shoulders. The bridge will be raised to meet the new standard for vertical clearance for trains using the tracks below, and will be lengthened to allow room for an additional track.

Route 616 carries approximately 800 vehicles per day, according to a 2010 traffic count.

The project’s estimated cost is $3.76 million and is subject to change as the project’s design is finalized. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2014 and finish in early summer 2015.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the project and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by August 6, 2012, to Brian Arnold, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
