Proposed improvements will increase safety at major highway junction

CULPEPER — Preliminary plans for improvements to the U.S. 29/U.S. 250 Bypass interchange will be available for public comment at a citizen information meeting on Wednesday. The meeting will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 1901 Emmet St. in Charlottesville.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is proposing a second lane on the entrance ramp from U.S. 29 southbound onto the westbound U.S. 250 Bypass. An additional lane will also be added to U.S. 29 from south of Hydraulic Road to the interchange. The auxiliary lane on the bypass will be extended west to the Barracks Road exit ramp.

The project will improve traffic operations and reduce delays along U.S. 29 south and west along the U.S. 250 Bypass. Safety will also be improved by the additional entrance lane and auxiliary lane that will provide more distance for vehicles to merge into traffic on the U.S. 250 Bypass.

Based on public comments received at Wednesday’s meeting VDOT will continue to develop the project’s design. A design public hearing is scheduled for this fall. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2015. The current cost estimate for the project is $7.5 million; that estimate may change as the project develops.

Project plans will be available for review at the citizen information meeting, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions. Information is also available on the Route 29/Route 250 Interchange project page on VDOT’s web site.

VDOT staff will be available during the meeting to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by July 6, 2012, to Michael Jacobs P.E., Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
