VDOT TO HOLD HEARING ON RT. 614 IMPROVEMENTS
Public comment on intersection project invited at Sept. 25 meeting

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a public hearing on a proposed project to improve the intersection of Route 614 (Twymans Mill Road) and Route 706 (Turner Drive) in Madison County. The hearing will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Madison County Administration Building, County Auditorium, 414 N. Main Street, Madison, VA 22727.

VDOT proposes to improve sight distance and increase safety at the intersection by re-grading Route 614 and modifying its side slopes. The existing roadway is approximately 18 feet wide with variable shoulder widths. The project’s design maintains the road’s nine-foot travel lanes to be context-sensitive and adds two-foot shoulders.

According to a 2010 traffic count, Route 614 carries 430 vehicles per day at this location. Route 706 carries 150 vehicles per day.

VDOT will close Route 614 for a 10-week period during construction. The proposed detour route uses Route 15 (James Madison Highway) to Route 622 (Tanners Road) to Route 705 (Twymans Mill Road) and back to Route 614.

The project’s estimated cost is $1.1 million and is subject to change as the project’s design is finalized. The project is scheduled for construction advertisement in June 2014.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the project and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by Oct. 5, 2012, to Mr. Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
