VDOT crew will replace aged bridge that spans Goose Creek in Fauquier Co.

CULPEPER – On Nov. 12 the Virginia Department of Transportation will close Route 724 (Sage Road) in Fauquier County to replace the bridge that spans Goose Creek. The bridge is located 0.1 mile south of Route 55 in Markham.

A VDOT crew will replace the existing bridge, built in 1925, which is posted with a three-ton weight limit. The work will involve rehabilitating the bridge’s substructure and installing new precast concrete beams with asphalt overlay driving surface. The bridge’s abutments will be reinforced with the stacked stone facades retained. Once complete the bridge will carry all legal loads.

While the road is closed, motorists will be detoured from Route 724 to Route 729 (Carrington Road) to Route 55 and reverse. Access will be maintained to properties on both sides of the bridge.

The work is expected to be complete and the road reopened to traffic on March 19, 2014.

Approximately 40 vehicles use this portion of Route 724 daily, according to a 2005 count.
