TEMPORARY SIGNALS ACTIVATE THURSDAY AT RT. 688 BRIDGE
Phase one construction under way; signals will control two-way traffic
CULPEPER — Beginning Thursday, Dec. 10 at 8 a.m., traffic will be restricted to one lane controlled by temporary signals at the Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) bridge over Thumb Run in Fauquier County. The bridge is located approximately 1.3 miles south of Route 647 (Crest Hill Road) in Orlean.
Temporary signals and other traffic-control devices will be installed today and tomorrow to accommodate construction. Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Martins Construction Corp. of Falls Church will work in phases to maintain a single travel lane throughout construction, working first on the southbound half of the bridge.
Motorists should remain alert for new signs and traffic controls as well as workers and equipment near the travel lanes.
The $1.96 million construction project will replace the existing Route 688 bridge, built in 1925, with a two-lane, concrete-slab bridge with an asphalt overlay riding surface. Situated approximately 350 feet south of the bridge, an additional structure spanning the tributary of Thumb Run will be replaced with a concrete box culvert. Work began this summer and will be completed in July 2016.
