VDOT HEARING FOR SCHOOLHOUSE RD. IN BEALETON IS FEB. 3
Public hearing rescheduled due to winter weather
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing next Tuesday, Feb. 3 on a proposed project to improve Route 661 (Schoolhouse Road) in the Bealeton area of Fauquier County. The hearing was originally planned for Jan. 27 but has been postponed due to snow.
The rescheduled hearing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Cedar Lee Middle School, 11138 Marsh Road, Bealeton.
At the open house-style hearing, the public can review project plans, ask questions and obtain information about the project’s timeline, cost and travel impacts, as well as provide feedback on the project orally or in writing. Written comments can also be submitted by mail to Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701 through Feb. 13.
With this project, VDOT will reconstruct a 0.15-mile segment of Route 661 near Cedar Lee Middle School to address safety concerns at a sharp curve and provide improved pedestrian and bicycle access. The project involves slight realignment of the roadway for better turning movements and installation of a three-way stop condition at the intersection near the school’s main parking lot.
VDOT will rebuild the substandard sidewalk in the project area, add a shared-use path directly in front of the school and install a crosswalk and additional sidewalk to connect to existing pedestrian paths on school grounds.
Construction is anticipated to occur during summer 2018 to avoid disrupting school transportation schedules. The work will require periodic lane closures and flagging of traffic.
According to 2014 data, 1,160 vehicles use Route 661 daily.
Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District office.
