Motorists advised to be alert for reduced speed limit, use caution in work zone

CULPEPER —The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists of a reduced speed limit and temporary drop-offs on the eastbound right shoulder while crews work to install curb on Route 3 (Germanna Highway) in Stevensburg as part of the ongoing project to widen the roadway to four lanes.

The two-week process is scheduled to begin Tuesday and may require intermittent lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The work area is from 0.9 mile west of Route 663 (Stevensburg Road) to Route 739 (Clay Hill Road).

As part of the work, a drop-off from the travel lane will be present on the outside edge of the eastbound right shoulder until crews place the curb and gutter. Motorists should use extra caution in the area.

For safety, VDOT will temporarily reduce the speed limit to 35 miles per hour in Stevensburg until the curb work is complete.

Using a curb-and-gutter drainage system helps reduce the project footprint in an effort to minimize impacts to nearby historical properties.

Existing message boards have been updated to notify drivers of the new traffic pattern.

The $23.6 million Route 3 project will widen the last remaining portion of two-lane highway between Culpeper and Fredericksburg. The project is anticipated to be complete in early fall.
