Project will address median crossovers near Quarles Truck Stop

CULPEPER — Yesterday, the Virginia Department of Transportation advertised for construction bids on the first phase of the Route 15/17/29 safety improvements project north of Opal.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety on Route 15/17/29 (James Madison Highway) by reducing the number of traffic conflicts along the corridor.

After the Dec. 6 public hearing, VDOT reviewed public comments and began finalizing the design. It was determined that additional design work was required to address roadway slope and drainage at the median crossover near Clark Brothers Gun Shop and East Coast Gas Station. Instead of delaying the first phase of the project from being completed this year, VDOT has chosen to include this crossover with the second phase of the project. Preliminary engineering on the second phase is expected to begin next year and will be presented at a public hearing.

This phase of the project will improve the three crossovers near Quarles Truck Stop. Two of three crossovers will be closed and the remaining crossover will be reconstructed to provide directional left-in, left-out access to the truck stop.

Bids are due on June 21 and construction is expected to begin in late summer. Completion is set for Dec. 11.
