RT. 658 BRIDGE CLOSURE IN LOUISA EXTENDED
Additional work will require construction to continue until Sept. 22
CULPEPER — The Route 658 (Old Apple Grove Road) bridge over Turners Creek in Louisa will be closed to traffic for a month longer than expected. The bridge, located 0.7 mile from Route 648 (Jackson Road), was closed May 22 and was expected to reopen Aug. 18. The opening date is now Sept. 22.
The project is replacing the existing one-lane timber deck bridge that was built in 1955 and had a posted weight restriction of 12 tons. The new bridge will be a 20-foot-wide, two lane concrete structure rated for all legal loads. The bridge carries approximately 60 vehicles daily, according to a 2016 traffic count.
The work includes building concrete footers and abutments to support the new concrete bridge. Once construction started, unstable soils in the area of the footers required additional work to stabilize the soil before the footers and abutments could be poured.
