VDOT will reduce traffic to one lane during the eight-week replacement

CULPEPER — The Route 787 (Watery Mountain Road) bridge over Cedar Run in Fauquier County will be reduced to one lane for approximately eight weeks while the Virginia Department of Transportation works to replace its superstructure.

The bridge, located about 400 feet from Route 17 (James Madison Highway), will close beginning Jan. 9. Weather permitting, the road is expected to reopen to traffic on March 3.

To accommodate local traffic on the dead-end road, the project will be completed in phases to maintain a single 10-foot travel lane. Traffic will be controlled by flagging. A full one-day closure of the bridge is expected to remove the existing superstructure and place the new superstructure. A date for the full closure has not yet been scheduled.

The existing Cedar Run bridge, which was built in 1953, is posted with a 21-ton weight restriction. The current timber-deck superstructure will be replaced. After construction, the bridge will be open to all legal-weight vehicles.

The bridge carries approximately 130 vehicles daily, according to a 2015 traffic count.

Message boards will be in place to notify the public of the closure.
