TORRENTIAL RAIN CLOSES NEARLY 90 ROADS IN CENTRAL VA
VDOT advises drivers to avoid high water, check 511Virginia.org for road conditions

CULPEPER — Another round of torrential rain has closed nearly 90 roads in Central Virginia. With more rain in the forecast, the Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to never drive around road closure signs or barricades and to use extra care at night when roadway hazards are more difficult to see.

As of 4 p.m., 86 roads remain closed including one primary route. Route 231 (Blue Ridge Turnpike) in Orange County is closed between Route 20 (Constitution Highway) and Route 655 (Jacksontown Road) due to high water.

Crews will remain on duty overnight in most of the district to continue monitoring road conditions.

VDOT has not been able to complete a damage assessment of all roads and bridges since floodwaters still cover some of the structures and roadways. As floodwaters recede, crews will begin making repairs as quickly as possible with priority given to roads and bridges that provide the only access to residents on the far side of the damaged structure.

Drivers should check www.511virginia.org or the 511 mobile app for updated information about the road closures and follow @VaDOTCULP on Twitter for updates.

VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
