VDOT responds to delays on Route 17 at Gloucester Point
(Turn lane to be restored)

FREDERICKSBURG – In an ongoing effort to improve traffic flow along Route 17 at the base of the Coleman Bridge, VDOT will be restoring the center turn lane to accommodate turning vehicles.

Since work started on the Route 17 Improvement Project at Gloucester Point, motorists have experienced delays especially during the morning and evening commutes.  The new traffic pattern, established for Phase I of the project, shifted all traffic between the toll booth and Lafayette Heights Drive (Rt. 1206) to the west and the center turn lane was eliminated. This was done in order to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction through the work zone. The change resulted in significant back ups on Route 17 and the bridge.  VDOT worked to minimize delays by adjusting the timing of the signal at Rt.17/Lafayette Heights Drive to allow longer time for turning traffic to clear the intersection.  However, the adjustments did not bring traffic flow back to its normal capacity.

Therefore, after some additional traffic reviews, it was decided to reopen the existing turn lane to traffic and install additional pavement to accommodate a dedicated left turn lane during construction.  This will ensure that the road has the same capacity that existed prior to the start of the project.

The turn lane will be restored next week and construction will begin on the new temporary lanes by March 23, weather permitting.

Work on Phase 1 of the project is scheduled for completion in spring 2010.
