ROUTE 17 MEDIAN CROSSOVER PROJECT TO BEGIN
Motorists may encounter temporary, single-lane closures in Gloucester County
FREDERICKSBURG—Construction work will begin next week on a project that will enhance safety and improve traffic flow along Route 17 in Gloucester County by making modifications to three median crossovers.
The crossovers are located in the vicinity of Route 1301 (Fields Landing Road) and Route 1307 (Crewe Road).
Motorists may encounter single-lane closures on northbound and southbound Route 17 near the crossovers starting on Wednesday, September 5. Construction will conclude in January 2013.
No lane closures will be scheduled in the southbound lanes of Route 17 between 6-9 a.m. No closures will be scheduled in the northbound lanes of Route 17 between 3-8 p.m.
Three crossovers are affected:
- Route 17 and Fields Landing Road: A new left turn lane will be built for southbound traffic using the median crossover, and a left turn lane for northbound traffic will be extended to accommodate more vehicles.
- Route 17, approximately 550 feet south of Fields Landing Road: This crossover, which serves a private driveway on the west side of Route 17, and no entrance to the east, will be closed by demolishing the existing adjacent raised concrete median and constructing a new concrete median with no opening.
- Route 17, approximately 1,220 feet north of Crewe Road: This crossover will be relocated approximately 120 feet north to align with East View Road, a private road serving a subdivision. New left turn lanes will be built for northbound and southbound traffic at this crossover.
All left turn lanes will be built to modern design standards. In addition, new curb and gutter will be added. New drop inlets will be installed in the median area to provide better drainage.
A construction contract for $541,273 was awarded to Curtis Contracting, Inc., of West Point, Va.
