ROUTE 223 BRIDGE IN MATHEWS COUNTY TO CLOSE BRIEFLY THIS AFTERNOON
Emergency repair needed following vehicle crash that damaged a barrier gate
FREDERICKSBURG – A bridge on Route 223 (Cricket Hill Road) in Mathews County that connects Gwynn’s Island to the mainland will be completely closed for one hour this afternoon for emergency repairs following damage from a vehicle crash.
The bridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic and marine traffic during the installation of a new barrier gate. The closure is expected to take place from approximately 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. Due to the unscheduled nature of this work, the precise closure time may vary slightly.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will install a new bridge barrier gate, which prevents traffic from proceeding on the bridge while it is raised for marine traffic.
Real-time listings of road conditions in Virginia are available on VDOT’s 24-hour traffic and travel information website, www.511Virginia.org. Motorists can also access 511Virginia by calling 511 from any telephone in Virginia.
