Motorists are asked to stay alert for lane closures on Route 17 Business (Main Street)

FREDERICKSBURG – All construction work is expected to resume this week at a bridge replacement project at Fox Mill Run on Route 17 Business (Main Street) in Gloucester County, including land-disturbing activities.

Work was limited to non land-disturbing activities in mid-December while VDOT secured a required environmental permit, which has been obtained.

Motorists are encouraged to proceed with caution in the work zone, and stay alert for new pavement markings, signs and construction equipment.

Brief, daytime lane closures will be required for several days in January at a median crossover on Route 17 Business near the work zone. The crossover will be open to traffic overnight and on weekends.

During the several days lane closures are required at the crossover, left turns will be prohibited into the southernmost entrance to the Main Street Center shopping area from northbound Route 17 Business. Also, left turns from this shopping center entrance onto northbound Route 17 Business will be prohibited.

These lane closures are required in preparation for an upcoming traffic shift connected with the bridge replacement project at Fox Mill Run on southbound Route 17 Business.

In late winter, all southbound traffic on Route 17 Business at Fox Mill Run will shift to northbound Route 17 Business.  The existing northbound travel lanes in the work zone will be re-striped to accommodate one lane of traffic in each direction. Both southbound travel lanes will be closed for the duration of the project. The project is scheduled to be finished in late fall 2012.
