LANE CLOSURE ON CHATHAM BRIDGE IN FREDERICKSBURG
Right eastbound lane is closed due to hole
FREDERICKSBURG – One lane is closed on the Chatham Bridge (Route 3 Business) at Fredericksburg due to a hole that has formed in the bridge deck.
The right eastbound travel lane is closed. All other lanes on the bridge are not affected, and remain open.
The hole, which is 2 feet by 3 feet across, is currently covered with a temporary steel plate.
The travel lane may be closed for the next 24-72 hours. Tomorrow, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will use a larger steel plate from the Fredericksburg Department of Public Works that is the width of an entire travel lane to cover the hole, sealed with an asphalt mix used in cold temperatures. This may allow VDOT to open the travel lane to traffic, depending on weather conditions.
VDOT bridge and structure engineers have determined that the hole will be repaired from underneath the bridge. VDOT is making arrangements to bring a snooper truck to the site. This equipment has an extended arm that can swing over the bridge rail and below the span, positioning VDOT personnel in a bucket to make the repair.
Concrete will be poured to fill the hole in the deck, and asphalt will be used to restore the travel surface.
VDOT will update motorists tomorrow with the latest information on the re-opening of the travel lane.
Motorists can find real-time information about traffic incidents and congestion on VDOT’s 24-hour travel information website, www.511Virginia.org. 511Virginia is also available by calling 511 from any telephone in Virginia.
