Traffic will be shifted to opposite side of Machodoc Creek bridge in King George

FREDERICKSBURG – Traffic on Route 218 at Machodoc Creek in King George County may experience brief delays on Thursday, May 14 at the site of a bridge rehabilitation project.

Motorists will be directed through the work zone by a flagging crew from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

With rehabilitation work substantially complete on the westbound lane of the bridge, traffic is being shifted so construction can begin in the eastbound lane.

Route 218 will remain reduced to one travel lane on the bridge through July 2015, when work is scheduled to be complete.

Construction work began in December 2014 to rehabilitate the bridge deck on Route 218 at Machodoc Creek. Workers are performing preventive maintenance to extend the life of the bridge. The bridge was built in 1968.

Workers are milling the bridge deck and installing a new concrete overlay. New guardrail is being installed, and new pavement will be applied on the bridge approaches.

Approximately 5,600 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to a VDOT traffic count

Motorists can call 511, visit or use VDOT’s 511Virginia free mobile app to find real-time traffic and work zone information in any area of the state.
