Fairview Rd. will be closed to through traffic for approximately six weeks starting March 20

UPDATE: Work continues on the Fairview Road bridge over Northeast Creek. VDOT anticipates to reopen the road in early May, weather permitting.

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin work to improve the condition of a bridge over Northeast Creek on Route 622 (Fairview Road) in Spotsylvania County.

VDOT will close Fairview Road just west of Route 601 (Wallers Road) to through traffic at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 20. The bridge is located between Wallers Road and Lewistown Road in the Partlow area of the county.

A detour will be in place for approximately six weeks while construction is underway.

Signs will be posted along the recommended detour, which is approximately 17 miles:

  • Route 738 (Partlow Road)
  • Route 614 (Duerson Lane)
  • Route 614 (Dickerson Road)
  • Route 601 (Lewiston Road)

A map of the detour route can be found online at www.virginiadot.org

Message boards will be posted next week to alert drivers to the upcoming bridge work and detour.

VDOT crews will replace the existing bridge’s steel beams, deck with new timber, steel and guardrail, while also making repairs to the vertical walls and foundation.

The existing bridge, constructed in 1964, is structurally deficient. It has a posted weight restriction of 20 tons for single-axle vehicles and 26 tons for tractor trailers. Following this project, the bridge’s weight limit posting is expected to be removed.

Fairview Road carries an average of 1,400 vehicles a day, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.
