With fabrication of new concrete culverts nearly complete, the contractor will start to mobilize to install structures at Massaponax Creek in Spotsylvania County

FREDERICKSBURG – Residents will observe more construction activity at the site of an emergency road repair project on Route 608 (Benchmark Road) over Massaponax Creek in Spotsylvania County beginning this week.

Crews with contractor W.C. Spratt will mobilize to install new concrete culverts starting the week of Monday, March 19.

Three new culverts are currently being manufactured at Oldcastle Precast in Spotsylvania County. Each culvert measures 10 feet high and 12 feet wide (photo, right). The culverts will be delivered to Benchmark Road by truck and installed using a crane.

Benchmark Road closed to through traffic at Massaponax Creek on Feb. 12, after intense rain caused the road over three corrugated metal drainage pipes to fail. The rainwater opened up a hole along the pavement edge measuring 5 feet wide, 14 feet long, and 8 feet deep.

Using emergency procurement methods, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) accelerated the fabrication of the replacement culverts. Due to their large size, and the specific dimensions needed for the site, the culverts were created for the Benchmark Road location. Fabrication began in February and will be completed in early April.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 5, 2018. The contractor has been provided a financial incentive to re-open the road by May 25, 2018.

“We want the public to know that VDOT and our contractor partners are working to re-open Benchmark Road to traffic as quickly as we can, and that the project remains on schedule to open to traffic ahead of mid-June 2018,” said Robbie Prezioso, P.E., Assistant District Administrator for Maintenance in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.

Before the road was closed to traffic, an average of 5,100 vehicles a day traveled Benchmark Road between Route 17 and Mine Road.

VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula.
